Kottan Baskets

Kottan basket weaving is a craft practised in the Karaikudi region of Tamil Nadu, traditionally by women who learned the technique as children and passed it through the household. Each basket is woven from a single palm leaf that is split, dried, and interlaced in precise geometric patterns — a process that takes days and requires the weaver to hold the entire structure in their memory without a pattern or template.
The resulting baskets are extraordinary: light, incredibly strong, and patterned in graphic black-and-white or natural tones that feel as relevant in a modern interior as in the original market context they were built for. Our Kottan collection supports the women artisans of Karaikudi who are keeping this labour-intensive craft alive.
Functional beauty. The kind that lasts for years and looks better over time.

They will be right at home in a maximalist bohemian interior just as well as they are as a pop of color in a minimalistic or modern home. They can be used as anything from a catch-all basket in your entryway to a fruit or bread basket in kitchen to a utility basket for your coffee table. The possibilities are just endless!
