Add a dash of color, pattern & texture to your home organization with our range of Kottan baskets. Kottans are handwoven palm leaf baskets made in the Chettinadu region of Tamil Nadu, India.

Once an integral part of every household, Kottans were widely used for religious ceremonies, gift giving, and daily storage. Traditionally practiced as a leisurely activity by women from affluent families, the art of weaving Kottan baskets nearly faded away before being slowly revived in the early 2000s. Today, this craft is kept alive by teaching traditional patterns and techniques to small groups of village women in the Chettinadu region—helping preserve the art form while creating a sustainable source of income. These baskets are made using dried Palmyra palm leaves, dyed and woven into vibrant, colorful designs.

With their vibrant hues, eclectic geometric patterns, and earthy textures, traditional Kottan baskets are a beautiful example of form meeting function. They feel right at home in maximalist bohemian interiors and work just as well as a pop of color in minimalist or modern spaces. Use them as a catch-all in your entryway, a fruit or bread basket in the kitchen, or a utility basket for your coffee table—the possibilities are endless.
