    The Story

A Kinnal Head is a portrait, not a full figure -  just a face, sculptural and finished in a warm, hand-painted yellow, meant to be looked at rather than explained. This woman's head is part of a small new collection Handmade Tales is introducing for the first time: a size and format we haven't worked in before, drawn from a wood-carving and hand-painting tradition local to a small part of Karnataka. Where a full figure fills a room, a head asks a smaller, more specific question - of scale, of detail, of what a face alone can hold.

    Designed for Modern Living

At a large scale, this head has the presence to anchor a console table, mantel, or the top of a bookshelf - somewhere it's seen head-on, not glanced at from the side. It holds its own next to books, ceramics, or a single dried branch, and doesn't need a matching piece or a full vignette to make sense in a room. On its stand it reaches 17 inches - genuine presence at eye level on a console or mantel.

    FAQ Accordion

This is Kinnal craft (also spelled Kinhal or Kinnala) - a wood-carving and painting tradition native to Kinhal village in Karnataka's Koppal district, practised by artisan families known as chitragars since the 15th–16th century, when it was patronised by the Vijayanagara court and later the Nawabs of Koppal. The craft is Geographical Indication-protected and now survives in a small number of families. Pieces are traditionally carved from a lightweight local wood, built up with a tamarind-seed-and-pebble base coat, and finished in the tradition's signature vivid color and glossy paint - a warm, hand-painted yellow on this piece.

    - A sculptural head portrait, not a full figure - a different kind of statement piece for a shelf, console, bookcase or Entryway
    - A warm, hand-painted yellow, catching the light differently through the day
    - Part of a small new collection - Handmade Tales' first release in this craft and format
    - Stands complete on its own - this piece is offered as a single head, not as half of a set
    - Small-batch and hand-finished - no two pieces are painted identically
    - A conversation piece that doesn't need a caption to work in a room.
